Work We've Done

Wanted: Clients in search of solutions to execution problems

Senior management and corporate EHS staff in the energy, utilities, petrochemical, chemical and construction industries were looking a better way to achieve better safety performance.

We've taught safety leadership skills to more than 5,000 operations line managers and supervisors. Here's what they say about Managing Safety Performance:

RE: Supervisor Safety Training

To all at Balmert Consulting,

I recently attended the 2 day Supervisor Safety Training course in Indiana, PA. I want to thank Paul for his great presentation of ideas and tools. As a front line supervisor I left feeling empowered with tools I could actually use to make a difference. I was forced to look in the mirror too to see the places I need to improve for the good of all our employees. I started using the tools and concepts presented at the training the first day I returned to work. In 2 days I learned to utilize a careers worth of experience. Many of the tools I know I will be able to use in areas outside of the realm of safety and outside of my work environment too. I wish I had more time to talk with Paul but this email will have to do. A BIG thanks to everyone at BC!

RE: Balmert Consulting Assessment Report

Jim

This is an excellent report that will be very helpful to my Station and the organization. I like your candor and appreciate your measure against industry standards. You and Fernando covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Even the situations or conditions that you were not sure of promote some reflection about whether we are doing the best that we can in those areas.

I really appreciate your willingness to mobilize to Hudson Station on a relatively short notice while we are in our outage. Your range and detail of scope was more than I expected in the time we allowed which demonstrates your ability to connect with people, your flexibility to schedule and conditions, and your own passion for promoting safety awareness and compliance.

Thank you very much for your feedback,

RE: Managing Safety Performance: Skills for Supervisors and Managers

Paul and Scott,

I just wanted to drop a note and thank you once again for the invite and training that you provided last Monday and Tuesday in your sessions. I enjoyed it very much and thought that the interactive way you taught the subject manner was very effective. You have some different processes than I have been exposed to before and I have already begun to utilize some of them once getting back to the site. I look forward to working with you in the future.

RE: Managing Safety Performance

Gary / Scott,

Thank you for sharing the results and for providing us with what I believe is the foundation for our long term success in safety performance. I continue to get very positive feedback from many of the supervisors and some have shared plans on how they are going to effectively utilize the tools and concepts you provided in their departments. This obviously assures me of the effectiveness of the content as well as the presentation.

I am looking forward to the possibility of working with you again in the future.

Thanks Again,

RE: Managing Safety Performance™

Paul,

Just wanted to say THANKS again for the tools that you taught me in the Managing Safety Performance Class. They are easy to use, and make approaching safety topics/issues easy.

I also wanted to share a recent success I had. I used the "Ask Don't Tell" Method in my Group meeting this past Monday. We had an injury incident at one of our production facilities over the weekend, so I used that as the topic. Your method worked well. The discussion was very lively. I got a lot of participation from my group and there were even several other safety issues raised during the discussion. I had one of my group comment that this was the best safety meeting they had attended. This was also a good opportunity for me to use my Stump Speech.

Thanks for giving me some effective, easy to use tools!

RE: Managing Safety Performance™ Training

Paul, hope all is well with you, I have forwarded a typical shift team plan to practice and refresh on the material you taught us.

Current performance: We have had 1 OSHA to date this year!!! This is company and contract employees combined. The one injury was resultant from an operator falling off of his bicycle when the chain came off. Abrasion of the hand that got infected. Our OSHA rate is 0.18. We are blow away best the safest refinery in the US operations thus far this year.

Our safety immersion program is thriving, 80 + grads thus far. However there is no doubt in my mind that the leadership training you provided was a huge enabler at exactly the right time. Our work force, especially our leaders absolutely believe that they make a difference and that it is absolutely possible to work injury free.

I know the money is nice, I also know that knowing that you made this kind of a difference is much more important.

RE: Managing Safety Performance™ Workshop

I want to thank you and Paul for two great days in Baton Rouge talking about a passion of mine SAFETY! The old adage that you cannot teach " an Old Dog new tricks " is not true. I learned a number of tools that can be practically applied to the subject. If just one person can take their selves out of the line of fire, this is all worthwhile and I have no doubt, this can and will happen. It must be a true joy to work with a subject that can mean so much to our working environment! Please pass this on to Paul and again, many kudos for a job well done!

Subject: Managing Safety Performance™

Dear Mr. Scott Pignolet,

When I first heard about the Managing Safety Performance training, it was really the behavior based aspects that caught my eye and got me curious. That's also the reason why we wanted to try it out. We knew a little bit, we thought I maybe could be the key to something, and said why not. After having had the training and got the feedback from the people I'm convinced that when it comes to safety nothing will change if we don't change our behaviors first. That will certainly be my gospel from now on. The course gave us the tools, and we now "just" have to follow through, which by no means will be easy, I'm sure. Your 3M's come handy I think.

Rafael Mendez was excellent, he got top scores, and I wouldn't dare to replace him with anybody for any future classes! You need very special talents and experiences to make a course on behaviors a success. And he certainly has them!

Thank you very much, we are looking forward to having Rafael here again.

Paul....

Great job in teaching the course Managing Safety Performance™.... The material was "spot on" for our team and you were very effective in your presentation skills..... I plan on using some of your concepts in managing other special initiatives in addition to safety... .... especially using monents of high influence and "killer questions"....

Subject: Safety Training

Paul,

Just wanted to say Thanks for your efforts to teach us old dogs new tricks. The Safety Performance Skills for Supervisors training was very good, informative and a very excellent class. I even got to use my stump speech the other day in a safety meeting.

  • A global chemical company wanted better results from the root cause investigations they were conducting for major environment and safety incidents.

We developed and delivered advanced incident investigation skills training to Environmental Safety and Health professionals based on the proprietary investigation methodology in use throughout the company. EHS professionals learned how to ask better questions; have their opinions during make a difference during investigation meetings; understand and deal with organization politics, evaluate the quality of the investigation findings.

  • A new grass roots ethylene and polyethylene operation in the Mid-East needed a coordinated training plan for the roll-out of its manufacturing information technology system.

This manufacturing IT system utilized the novel approach of integrating twelve software programs from eight vendors from around the world - from Houston to Dubai. Our client was the firm responsible for successful software integration and program installation.

We began by setting training standards for the individual vendor training programs. We established an integrated master schedule meeting the plant's startup schedule. We developed an introductory interactive computer based overview of the entire system. Startup of the system proved successful: users had the skills and knowledge to meet the demands of the new system.

  • The upgrading department for a major oil-sands operation witnessed declining operation performance. What role was operating staff know-how playing in this problem? And what should be done about the situation?

We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the training processes and results for the department's operators, maintenance and technical staff. We looked at business performance - particularly safety and production - to determine where inadequate operating know-how was contributing to unsatisfactory performance.

We developed a long-term strategic solution for training designed to work on the performance issues that were directly related to business performance. The strategy - which incorporated best practices for efficient delivery and effective results - is part of the integrated effort that is returning operating performance to the level senior management desires.
